The Education Bureau of Jiyang District of Sanya City, South China's Hainan Province, has been offering free public courses for primary and middle school students from families with financial difficulties for three years. This year they include singing, dancing, aeromodelling and 15 other interest-oriented topics.

The public courses adopt the mode of "government procurement plus voluntary service," inviting professional teachers to provide special courses to students to develop good interests and hobbies.

They not only provide homework tutoring, question answering and knowledge review, but also offer handiwork, pen-and-ink calligraphy and safety knowledge materials. Students can choose which ones to take.

Hou Xuehua, Director of the Education Bureau of Jiyang District, introduced that Luopeng and Jiyang primary schools and three others are the five venues of the public course activity.

The courses especially target children from impoverished families, left-behind children and children of migrant workers, Hou added.

Luopeng is a poverty-stricken village in Jiyang District. The primary school in the village provided free summer vacation after-school classes this year to teach students painting, reading and how to do homework.

The public course activity is one of the measures taken by the district to improve the quality of primary education so that students can get all-round development.

After three years of effort, the primary education of Jiyang District has remarkably improved. In addition to more knowledge, students now have better manners and teachers have more advanced teaching ideas.
